This will be the 45th meeting across all competitions between the two teams since 1998 and Barcelona have the upper hand.

Barcelona, who are currently placed fourth on the standings, have recorded 27 victories compared to sixth-placed Villarreal's eight, while 10 matches ended in a stalemate.

Emery recognised that Deportivo Alavés knew when to dig in and when to make the most of their chances.

Unai Emery, the Villarreal manager, refected on their 2-1 defeat to Deportivo Alaves on Wednesday and he knows they will have to improve their finishing ahead of their clash with Barcelona.

“The match started badly for us. They scored their first goal quickly, we recovered and we had chances, but we lacked a cutting edge that their goalkeeper had," Emery said.

"In the second half, we found the equaliser and we could have gone ahead. They were able to find their moments and score the second goal. We knew it was going to be a different match from the one the other day against Levante.

"Deportivo Alavés had a lot to play for, they knew when to dig in when we were dominating and they reacted well. They had their moments and they capitalised on them.”

Meanwhile, Real Betis, who are placed fifth on the standings, will be keen to move closer to the top fur teams when they face Real Madrid at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano on April 24.

The two teams will be meeting for the 50th time across all competitions since 1995 and Madrid have the upper hand.

The two teams are scheduled to clash for the 23rd time across all competitions since 2007 and Sociedad have the edge over Eibar.
