Dominic Thiem and Naomi Osaka are the men's and women's singles defending champions having won last year's titles.

However, Thiem, who is one of the best male tennis players in the world at the moment, has withdrawn from this year's tournament due to a wrist injury.

Top-class players such as Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev will be eyeing Thiem's men's singles crown.

Osaka will be determined to retain her women's singles crown, but Ashleigh Barty, Aryna Sabalenka, Elina Svitolina, Bianca Andreescu, and Iga Świątek are among the top female stars who will compete in New York.

However, US Open's tournament director Stacey Allaster has made it clear that press conferences will be mandatory during the tournament.

"That the players are available to talk to the media is very important for our fans," Allaster said.

"There will be no change to our protocols, and they will be applied in the same fashion to all players. But there will be flexibility given in respect of the athletes' health. We've done this in the past.

"When a player has an injury or can't physically attend, there is a medical evaluation and the doctors take the decision."
