The 2026 MotoGP World Championship heads to Italy for Round 14, with the Red Bull Grand Prix of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera set for Misano on Sunday 13 September at 14:00 – and the title race is suddenly tightening at the top.
Marc Marquez arrives in confident mood after a sensational Aragon weekend that saw the reigning world champion claim his fourth victory of the campaign and third consecutive win at the Spanish circuit. The Ducati Lenovo rider has cut Jorge Martin’s championship advantage from 40 points to just 19 in the space of a single weekend.
Martin still leads the standings on 256 points, but Marquez is now on 237, with Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi only five points further back on 232. Fabio Di Giannantonio sits fourth on 208, while Ai Ogura completes the top five on 203.
Marquez’s Aragon victory was far from straightforward. Despite starting as the pre-race favourite, he dropped to third on the opening lap after making what he described as a “huge mistake”. He forgot to disengage his rear ride-height device, leaving it activated through the fast Turn 2 and Turn 3 sequence.
“I did a huge mistake today because I forgot the rear device,” Marquez admitted afterwards. “And then when I went out from Turn 1 to Turn 2, the rear device was activated and loaded again. And then I was super slow on that fast Turn 2, 3. Two riders overtook me.”
That setback only made his eventual victory more impressive. Marquez regained ground by passing Jorge Martin at Turn 15 on the opening lap before overtaking Bezzecchi on lap six. He eventually finished 1.7 seconds ahead of KTM’s Pedro Acosta.
“Then it was more difficult,” Marquez said. “But from that point I just built the pace and it was a nice fight on those first laps. Then I was trying to control the race, and then when 10 laps remained attack, open the gap and just manage.”
Misano therefore arrives at a pivotal moment in the championship. For Martin, the priority will be to halt Marquez’s momentum. Bezzecchi, meanwhile, remains firmly in the title picture and will be looking to turn Aprilia’s impressive season into a home-race advantage.
With just 19 points separating Martin and Marquez, every overtake, qualifying position and mistake could prove decisive. At Misano, the championship battle enters another crucial chapter.
