Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: HWB Greyville i

Mathew de Kock runs through the De Kock stable’s runners for the meetings at HWB Greyville on Friday and Turffontein on Saturday:

HWB Greyville, Friday:

Race 3, 1600m: “Diamond Maker is having a late start to his career. He is a nice horse with some potential, taking on a strong field. It will depend on how green he is. He is bred out of a Centenary mare, so this will probably be the bottom of his distance range, but he has shown us enough to warrant an eachway chance.”

Race 8, 1400m: “Officer In Command is always competitive. The 1400m is not his best trip, he prefers a mile. He will need a bit of luck in running, has a Place chance.”

Race 9, 1200m: “Queen Braganza is probably our best runner for the meeting. She won her Maiden convincingly and seems to have ability and lots of speed. The soft track is a slight concern, she is a small filly. But all things being equal she should have a good winning chance.”

Turffontein, Saturday:
Race 1, 1160m: “Splittheeights is a Vercingetorix newcomer showing good quality work, he’s nice type of horse who needs a bit further. It’s a strong race but on his work we think he has a Top 3 chance.”

Race 4, 1400m: Ovation Star was a very impressive Maiden winner, though she didn’t beat anything of note. She seems to have improved and has a low draw. This is a first test for her, so it will be interesting to see how she shapes in Grade 3 company. Based on her work, we think she can be up to the task and should be included in all bets.”

Race 5, 1400m: “Miami Mountain jumped in class last time and won a good race, but he had a lot in his favour that day and has a sticky gate this time. He will enjoy the extra 200m because he likes to build up his run. He’ll need a bit of luck, but we’ll be disappointed if he’s not competitive. Whispering Death had a nice comeback run against older horses when he needed it, he got a little tired. From a nice draw he’ll be able to get a good position, though 1400m may just be a bit sharp. The race will be a nice stepping stone for races like the Dingaans. Then we have One Eye On Vegas, who is showing top work and he deserves his place in the race. He has a good eachway chance, we think he is feature material, but he has a terrible draw to overcome.”

Race 7, 1600m: Spumante Dolce has her first run of the season, as planned. This is her prep for the Betway Summer Cup and she will make good improvement, but she is not far off peak fitness and looking great. She brings some of the best form into the race from her last six runs. We’re expecting a good run from her.”

Race 8, 2400m: We elected to run Corrupt in the Michaelmas over 1900m last time, as a stepping stone for the Java. He conducted himself well, only beaten two-and-a-bit. He will enjoy this trip.  He is out at the weights, but we think he has a few points in hand. It wouldn’t surprise us if he runs a big race.”

Race 9, 1160m:Calantha’s has had a nice long preparation for her return to the track. She’s going to improve from the run. But she’s got handy form, she’s in good order and is hopefully ahead of the handicapper. A good run is expected.”

Race 10, 1160m: Limerick Lace made a nice return to racing a few weeks ago. She was making a bit of a breathing noise, we’ll be fitting her with a tongue tie and I think it’s going to make a difference. She may be drawn on the wrong side of the track but should run a decent race, we’ll be happy with her getting into the top four or five past the post.”
