The Liverpool legend and former Rangers manager was appointed as Dean Smith's successor last week. Villa parted company with Smith following a run of five straight defeats in the league.

"The excitement levels are really, really high," Gerrard told VillaTV. "I'm very hungry, very ambitious and the start can't come quickly enough.

"I think coming to Villa, competing against Villa for many, many years, I know the size of the club, I know the standards that are already here.

"I know many of the players, I played for England with a lot of the players. I played with Ashley Young, who I've spoken to, I know Danny Ings very well from his time at Liverpool when I was a coach," he added.

Brighton have drawn five of their last six matches and are without a Premier League win since mid-September following a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United before the international break.

Brighton took four points off Villa last season. The Seagulls won 2-1 at Villa Park before a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture at Amex Stadium.
