2024-25 Italian Serie A
Matchday 38
Napoli v Cagliari
Stadio Diego Armando Maradona
Naples, Italy
Friday, 23 May 2025
Kick-off is at 20h45
Napoli will look to reclaim the
Serie A title from Inter Milan when Cagliari visit the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in the final round of the season on Friday, May 23.
The Partenopei are still in pole position to win the Scudetto for the second time in three years despite dropping points in each of their last two matches against Genoa and Parma.
Antonio Conte's side climbed back to the league summit on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run and they've stayed ahead of the Nerazzurri since then after collecting another eight points.
A 0-0 stalemate with the Crusaders on May 18 maintained the one-point gap to Inter, who could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Lazio after conceding a 90th-minute penalty.
The Islanders secured their top-flight status with a 3-0 victory over Venezia on May 18 which arrested a two-match losing streak.
It was the joint-biggest win without conceding for Davide Nicola's side this term and they've pulled five points clear of the relegation zone in 14th position.
The Naples outfit ran out convincing 4-0 victors in the reverse fixture on September 15 to extend their unbeaten run this match-up to eight games.
Conte, who will miss the season-finale after being sent off against Parma, has urged his players to finish the job in front of their adoring fans.
"We are close to the finish line but we have to take the final step. We will try to do it with our fans at the Maradona. The championship is proving to be very hard-fought and we are happy to have succeeded in our intent to be a nuisance until the end," the Italian said.
"We have been at the top of the standings for a long time despite a year that has presented various difficulties and emergencies. We have never complained and we have continued with our own strength."
Nicola was elated at guiding the club to safety with a game to spare in his first season at the helm, insisting they achieved their objective without needing to rely on results elsewhere.
"We are very happy because we earned it on the pitch without waiting for help from others," the Italian said. "There were games before this one like against Como and Udinese where we met two teams that still have something more than us.
"Today, however, the boys did something extraordinary, they pulled out a great performance, they achieved the second salvation in a row, with two different coaches.
"The goal was to save ourselves alone without help from other pitches, well done the boys for winning and convincing. A beautiful celebration with our people, the thing that matters most."
