The 2024 Italian MotoGP is scheduled to be held in Scarperia e San Piero - comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Florence, Italy on 2 June.
What to know about the Italian MotoGP
Established in 1949, the event was known as the Italian: Gran Premio Delle Nazioni (Nations Grand Prix) until 1990 and it was one of the original rounds of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing calendar.
From 1972 to 1993, the event rotated among several circuits and has been held at the Mugello Circuit since 1994, except in 2020 in which the race was cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
Most recent race
The Catalan MotoGP which was the sixth round of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship calendar took place on 26 May.
The race was won by Francesco Bagnaia who was followed by his Ducati teammates Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez who finished second and third respectively.
Martin is still placed at the top of the 2024 MotoGP riders' standings followed by Bagnaia and Marquez respectively as the trio battle for the MotoGP world title.
Looking at the constructors' standings, Ducati, who won the 2023 title, are sitting at the top - followed by Aprilia and KTM respectively.
Martin will be the favourite to win the Italian MotoGP, but he will face stiff competition from experienced motorcycle riders Bagnaia and Marc Marquez.
Ducati rider Enea Bastianini, who is placed fourth in the riders' standings, will also be eyeing the Italian MotoGP title.
“It was a frustrating race for me," Bastianini said after finishing 18th at the 2024 Catalan MotoGP.
"As a long-lap penalty came at the halfway point, I was forced to run off the track after an overtake manoeuvre by Alex Márquez, in a situation where I had no other option but to cut the first chicane.
"I hope there’ll be more consideration in the future in this type of situation, as I feel that I didn’t deserve this penalty. On the contrary, I thought Alex was the one who had to give me back the position, but it didn’t go this way. Now we need to focus on making amends in the next race.”
