Rafael Nadal will be looking to put Botic van de Zandschulp to the sword when they meet in a 2022 Roland Garros third-round match on Friday.

The Spanish tennis icon tacked on a win to earn his 300th grand slam victory, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 over France’s Corentin Moutet in a second round match on Wednesday.

The man nicknamed Mr Clay has won 21 Grand Slam men's singles titles, the most in history, including a record 13 French Open titles, but he was beaten in last year's semi-finals by Novak Djokovic.

“The last couple of months haven’t been easy, and the beginning of the season has been fantastic, unforgettable and very emotional,” Nadal said after defeating Moutet.

“After Indian Wells, I had a problem in my rib and I had to be off the court for a while, so it’s day-by-day work and the victories help a lot.

“Playing rallies, winning matches like tonight, it’s so important. It gives me a chance to have another practice tomorrow, and then another match after tomorrow," he continued.

“I’m just enjoying the fact that I’m at Roland-Garros, the most important tournament of the year for me.”

Meanwhile, Van de Zandschulp reached this round after benefiting from the retirement of Italian star Fabio Fognini (6-4, 7-6 [2], 3-2) in a second round match on Wednesday.

In the first round, Van de Zandschulp, who is the current Dutch number one men's singles player, beat Russian qualifier Pavel Kotov (6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2).

His breakthrough occurred at the 2021 US Open when he became the third qualifier in the history of the event to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.

This remains Van de Zandschulp's best achievement in grand slam tournaments having never gone beyond the third round of Roland Garros.

Nadal and Van de Zandschulp will meet for the first time in an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event.
