Ferrari look to break 15-year drought at Suzuka

Ferrari will look to break a 15-year win drought at the Japanese Grand Prix when round 17 of the 2019 Formula 1 season is held at Suzuka International Racing Course on Sunday 13 October.

The Italian team last claimed the chequered flag in Japan way back in 2004, the season in which Michael Schumacher won his seventh and last F1 Drivers’ Championship.

Ferrari’s recent pace and form suggests they could enter the 2019 Japanese GP as favourites, with the sweeping speed of Suzuka not dissimilar to recent races in Belgium and Italy, where the Scuderia was dominant.

However, team infighting and a mechanical failure cost them dearly at the last race in Sochi: Ferrari went from a likely 1-2 finish to settling for third place with Charles Leclerc, with Sebastian Vettel forced to retire his car.

Ferrari has not won at Suzuka since 2004

This leaves Ferrari a full 162 points behind Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship, with Leclerc dropping to 34 points behind second-placed Valtteri Bottas in the Drivers’ Championship.

If Ferrari can continue their pace and get their team tactics right, then their long drought at Suzuka could well be ending this weekend.
