Betway SA20 - Playoffs

2023-24 SA20

Playoffs

6-7 February 2024

The Betway SA20 2024 has entered its business end as Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Durban's Super Giants, Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings battle it out for the R34 million winners' prize.

Sunrisers and the Super Giants will go head to head in the first qualifier at Newlands on Tuesday, February 6.

Adrian Birrell's side finished top of the table by one point ahead of DSG after beating Paarl Royals by 5 wickets on the final day of the group stage.

Needing one run to win off two deliveries, Patrick Kruger hit Nqabayomzi Peter for six over the bowler's head to secure a fourth win on the trot for the Eastern Cape franchise.

The Super Giants missed out on top spot after losing to Joburg Super Kings by 7 wickets in their final match on February 3 at Wanderers.

Half-centuries from JJ Smuts (55) and Wiaan Mulder (59) helped Lance Klusener's side post a formidable total of 203, but the Super Kings reached the target with one ball to spare on the back of a 102-run opening stand by Faf du Plessis (57) and Leus du Plooy (57).

DSG captain Keshav Maharaj felt there were positives to take from their first defeat in five games, having scored their third highest total of the season.

"We've been a tight-knit unit and different energy within the team despite the losses," Maharaj said. "We need to go back and build on the positives from this game."

DSG won their first encounter of the season by 35 runs at St George's Park before SEC triumphed by 5 wickets at Kingsmead.

Then on Wednesday, February 7, Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings clash in the playoff eliminator at Wanderers.

The Royals had led the way early on, but they finished third on 22 points after suffering four defeats on the spin at the end of the round-robin format.

JSK clinched fourth place courtesy of their nail-biting victory over the Super Giants in Johannesburg, having seen Pretoria Capitals edge ahead of them in the table following a tense 4-wicket win against MI Cape Town at Newlands on February 3.

Du Plessis, who was named Player of the Match against DSG, is hoping the Joburg crowd will play their part against Paarl to rally behind his team once more.

"Amazing how the game of cricket has fortunes changing. I thought we were dead and buried when we were heading to the ground," the Super Kings skipper said.

"On wickets like these, you need a good start. Myself and Du Plooy gave that to the team. I have not been at my best throughout the tournament; frustrated with that but in games like these you find the soldier inside you.

"We're playing the Eliminator at home and then even game after that is at home. The crowd will be behind us and if we can put in a performance like this, we will be a difficult team to beat."

The Royals did the double over the Super Kings in the round-robin, winning by 7 wickets at Boland Park and 5 wickets at Wanderers.
