Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: HWB Kenilworth

Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock has no runners at this weekend’s meetings, but we will be previewing the meeting at HWB Kenilworth on Saturday, where a R3-million TAB Pick 6 pool is expected on Splashout Cape Derby Day. You can take your tote Pick 6 bets via the Betway Tote portal, and remember that your 6% betting tax is paid back into your account at month-end.

The Pick 6 starts in Race 4, at 13:50:

Race 4:

Pomodoro’s Jet defeated subsequent Gold Rush winner and now G1 Derby contender Rapidash over 1600m in December before going down less than a length to At My Command in a strong Class A feature over 1400m last time. He has won over the track and trip and seems to be near the mark of his best efforts, but in an open contest there are a brigade of dangers including USA’s Hope, Solomons Seal and Charlie Croker. Consider ‘Field’ in Leg 1 to get you through, come hell or high water!

Race 5:

Royal Aussie was quietly fancied to win the Cape Met, but failed to see out 2000m. He reverts to a mile in Listed company and looks to have the best credentials. Quasiforsure was below best last time, he is going to strip fitter now and with English jock Daniel Muscutt aboard could skip clear with his known, good turn of foot. Future Prince is dangerous, he looks suited to this contest.

Race 6:

Support for a host of runners here and valid winning arguments to go with said support, but on her third to Princess Calla in the Majorca Stakes, Double Grand Slam looks ready to claim her first Graded win. That she appeared to jump a patch on the bend that day and lost her rhythm, underlines the merit of her performance. That she is 2kg off with second-placed Rascova for a neck beating, provides further confidence. Brave punters: Banker Double Grand Slam in an open race and hope for upsets in the two features later. This is one way of playing for a big payout.

Race 7:

It’s really hard to go against Sean Tarry’s Thunderstruck, favoured at the weights with his high rating and with everything in his form pointing to another top run. If you believe he is slightly vulnerable over 1200m in this league, distance specialist Surjay, high-level campaigner Bereave and up-and-coming Silver Falcon come into play. Big players may want to alternate bankers in two Pick 6 perms – Double Grand Slam in a first perm and Thunderstruck in second if you’re covering him in the first.

Race 8:

It seems similarly hard to oppose the lovely colt Green With Envy here. He has been perfectly prepared by an ace Grade 1 handler and has a lot going for him, but that he comes into the race without a Grade 1 success to his name is a slight concern. This may well be his first tip-level success and he is probably unstopable, but if one keeps a clear head, the filly Beach Bomb must rate a danger of sorts. The only G1 winner in the race (from an above average crop of fillies), her trainer has the confidence to race her against the colts and that could be telling. There was a lot to like about way Rapidash won the Gold Rush and as a fast improver he also warrants respect.

Race 9:

In listening to Cape Racing’s ‘Perfectly Placed’ trainer interviews, Brett Crawford sounds bullish about well-bred Dame Of Trix. She’s the only filly with ‘Class B’ form and hence well in, in this ‘Class C’ race as she may be ahead of the handicapper at her rating of 80. She’s a big runner. It’s wide open if you look beyond her and, again, big players may consider a third Pick 6 permutation with Dame Of Trix as a banker in the first, and well covered in the second. Smaller players: Watch out for Green Valkyrie, noted in the trainer interviews as one that could surprise over the shorter trip.

Our base Pick 6 perm below:

Leg 1: FIELD (1-14)
Leg 2: 4,6,7
Leg 3: 8
Leg 4: 2,3,8,9
Leg 5: 4,6,8,9
Leg 6: 2,4
(R1,344).
