Mike de Kock's courageous runners on today's racecards

Most trainers will tell you they'd rather have a horse with limited talent and plenty of 'heart', than a super talented horse with no 'heart' or courage. The ones with some fighting spirit and a resolute character give you a run for your money every time, but the unreliable ones can flatter one day only to deceive the next.

Game horses have a bigger chance of producing their best in a given race, barring injury or unforeseen problems, and can generally be relied upon to try hard whenever they go to post.
Mike de Kock said he has two runners with evident courage entered for Saturday's meeting on the inside track at Turffontein. Run As One will contest Race 3 over 1800m, a handicap for three-year-olds. The trainer
commented: "Run As One enjoys his racing, he has no problem engaging in a tussle and he likes to win. By virtue of that alone you can never ignore him. He's in his own age group and should give a good account of himself in a competitive field, though this is not his best course."

Mike joked: "Also, Run As One is up against the unbeaten Zeus, who is being touted the best thing to hit a racecourse in modern times. He has so many owners they are enlarging the winner's enclosure to fit them all in!"
Mike's four-year-old Masaaken is in a similarly competitive handicap, Race 6 over 2600m, merit rated at 75. "She's also a filly who seldom gives up, she makes up for her limitations by trying her utmost and she's won four for us that way. There are eight runners in this race, all with a winning chance.
Masaaken stays very well, in fact I wish there were races for her further than 2600m, so she'll be in with a fighting chance on her proven stamina."

This is a tricky mid-February card at Turffontein and punters are advised to look to Kenilworth on Saturday for arguably easier pickings. Interestingly, champion trainer Justin Snaith is flying leading apprentice Rachel Venniker in from Durban for five of his mounts, among which Navy Strength (Race 3), Thefutureisbright (Race 5) and L'Ami Jean (Race 8) have good winning chances on recent form.Take a look at today’s racecards at Betway and place your horse racing bets.

In-form trainer Vaughan Marshall saddles the day's best Value bet, Sacha, in Race 7 over 1600m. She's dropped in the ratings to what could be a winning mark and is well weighted. Her odds are expected to be in the 7-1 to 10-1 range.
