England v South : T20 Series Preview

England v South Africa Wednesday, 21 June 2017 The Rose Bowl, Southampton England and South Africa will meet in the first of a three-match Twenty20 International series at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday, 21 June 2017. Both teams come into the series having suffered disappointing ICC Champions Trophy campaigns. England looked one of the strongest teams in the tournament, but came unstuck in the semifinal against Pakistan, while South Africa never got of second gear and were eliminated in the group stage after losses to Pakistan and India. The Proteas’ play in the ICC Champions Trophy was marked by a debilitating caution in their batting and a lack of self-belief and clear planning in their bowling - something they will have to dispense with immediately if they are to have any chance against an England team which plays with freedom and aggression. AB de Villiers will captain the T20I team (with usual skipper Faf du Plessis being protected for the upcoming four-match Test series) and SA will see an injection of fresh blood with the likes of Reeza Hendricks, Tabraiz Shamsi, Mangaliso Mosehle, Dane Paterson and JJ Smuts linking up with the squad. England, meanwhile, have named five uncapped players in their squad and have chosen to rest the likes of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali. Eoin Morgan captains the home side. England and South Africa have met in 12 T20Is down the years, with the Proteas claiming seven wins compared to four for the Three Lions. In England, SA have two wins from four matches, with one loss and one no result.   This will be the Proteas’ first T20I at the Rose Bowl, while England have recorded two wins and two losses from their four matches in Southampton. The teams' last T20I match was a group stage clash in the World Cup in India last year, which saw England chase down SA's score of 229 with two balls to spare.
