2020-21 DStv Premiership

Matchday 6 of 30
05-06 December 2020

A total of five teams still boast unbeaten records heading into matchday six of the 2020-21 DStv Premiership season.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns currently lead the way, having won four of their opening five matches. The Brazilians sit on 13 points and along with Swallows FC, Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows and TS Galaxy have yet to lose a match.

Sundowns are also the top scorers in the league, having scored a total of 12 goals following a 3-0 thumping of Stellenbosch FC last weekend. The Brazilains next face a Maritzburg United side rooted at the bottom of the table and who have yet to conjure a single point after five rounds of fixtures.

The Team of Choice have already made a coaching change with former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp having taken over the reins from Eric Tinkler in Pietermaritzburg. It is the German's third stint at the club and arguably his toughest yet, and a stark contrast from the challenges he faced with the Amakhosi last season.

Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi believes it is too early to earmark Sundowns as Premiership favourites, even if all the early signs suggest that the Brazilians are well on their way to a fourth league title in succession.

"I believe it's too early. It's a 30km marathon and we have just finished 5km, we can't be making noise," Mngqithi said. "We know we are still going to face hurdles and it's every coach's wish and every player's wish to win every match we play, but it's always better to concentrate on each game at a time."

The weekend's proceedings will kick-off with two matches. Arrows will play host to second-placed Swallows at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium while Cape Town City will tackle Orlando Pirates at Danie Craven Stadium in a fixture that never disappoints.

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila will then host big-spending AmaZulu at Thohoyandou Stadium with the latter having bolstered their squad with the signings of Phakamani Mahlambi and Veli Mothwa this week.

This will be followed by Sundowns' match away to Maritzburg at Harry Gwala Stadium. There are two matches scheduled for Sunday with Galaxy at home to Stellenbosch FC at Mbombela Stadium and Chippa United away to Baroka FC at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

There will only be six matches this weekend due to Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic's involvement in Caf Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup preliminary round fixtures respectively.
