City, Pirates in crunch showdown

2018/19 Absa Premiership

Round 29 preview

4 May 2019

The meeting of Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City is set to be the crunch match in Round 29 of the 2018/19 Absa Premiership season, with seven of the eight matches to be played on the afternoon of Saturday 4 May.

City host Pirates at Athlone Stadium and will be looking to bring themselves right back into the mix as far as the title is concerned: a win for the Cape side would leave them three points off the top heading into the final round of the season.

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy.

On the other hand, a victory for Pirates would put them within touching distance of the title ahead of their final game at home to Polokwane City next weekend.

Reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns are still in the mix for the trophy, but their penultimate match will only be played next week Tuesday, May 7, when they host Golden Arrows. This is because the Brazilians will be hosting Wydad Casablanca this weekend in the return leg of their CAF Champions League semifinal.

Kaizer Chiefs forward Bernard Parker.

Another key game for both the top eight battle and the relegation dog fight sees Kaizer Chiefs host Free State Stars at Mbombela Stadium. The Amakhosi need a strong end to the season to ensure they finish in the top half of the log, while Ea Lla Koto are perilously close to the drop and will be fired up to take points off the Soweto giants.

The rest of the matches include Bidvest Wits (who still have a slight chance of winning the title) at home to Baroka, while Maritzburg United and Chippa United face must-win games against SuperSport United and Polokwane respectively.
