Chiefs; City Relishing Run-In as Title Underdogs

PSL Title Underdogs

Two teams still harbouring faint hopes of bringing home the ABSA Premiership when the curtain comes down on the season in May, Polokwane City and Kaizer Chiefs, will be gearing up for their final push towards what would be an unlikeliest triumph from the brinks of a campaign filled with heart-break and hardship.

They are currently separated by just one point and one place on the table with the Limpopo based outfit occupying sixth place ahead of Chiefs in seventh. The pair played out to a 1-1 draw last month – a result that neither helped nor hindered either sides chances in the race for the trophy.

Rise and Shine have awoken to the real possibility of causing arguably the greatest upset in the history of the PSL. Despite suffering a bitterly disappointing first-ever defeat against minnows Milano United in the Nedbank Cup in January, Polokwane City are unbeaten in their last six matches in the league, turning in some impressive results along the way with draws against Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and most recently Cape Town City.

While they might not be scorelines worthy of winning Championships, they have certainly thrown a spanner into the works and ensured that the door in the title race has been left wide open.

Polokwane City recent results:

15/03 – CT City 0-0 PLK City
09/03 – PLK City 2-0 Arrows
06/03 – FS Stars 1-1 PLK City

The Glamour Boys bid farewell to their Italian head-coach Giovanni Solinas less than six months into his tenure at Naturena, swiftly replaced by former manager Ernst Middendorp. Since his appointment in December, Kaizer Chiefs have won five of the ten league matches he has overseen whilst suffering just one defeat to leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. He also maintained his unbeaten derby record with a 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates, ending a sequence of successive defeats against their fellow Soweto outfit in the process.

Kaizer Chiefs recent results:

15/03 – Supersport 1-1 Chiefs
09/03 – Chiefs 1-0 Maritzburg
02/03 – Chiefs 3-2 Highlands

Jozef Vukusic and his side will be eager to get going again starting with their next outing lined up – a Limpopo derby against Black Leopards while Kaizer Chiefs have arguably the easiest run-in out of all the title contenders.

Amakhosi will not face any of the teams battling it out at for the spot at the summit from their last six fixtures with their toughest test on paper being a trip to eighth-place Bloemfontein Celtic in April – their only upcoming opponents in the top-half of the table.

If either of these two are to march home over the finish line in first place they will be hugely reliant on their big-hitters finding some late-season form. City’s Mohammed Anas (6 goals) and Chief’s Khama Billiat (5 goals) have been underwhelming to say the least throughout 2018/19 by their standards, turning in just a handful of standout performances, although they are the sides leading scorers heading into this crucial phase of the campaign.
