Champions Trophy - Proteas Take On Pakistan

2017 ICC Champions Trophy

Group B - Pakistan v South Africa Wednesday, 7 June 2017 Edgbaston, Birmingham

South Africa will target a second straight victory in Group B at the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy when they take on Pakistan at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Wednesday, 7 June.

The Proteas got off to a fine start this past Saturday when they defeated Sri Lanka by 96 runs at the Kennington Oval in London. After posting 299, AB de Villiers’ side bowled the Lankans out for 203, with leg-spinner Imran Tahir claiming the man of the match prize with a superb bowling spell of 4-27 in 8.3 overs.

Pakistan, by contrast, never got out of second gear in their grudge match with India in Birmingham on Sunday. Sarfraz Ahmed side’s crumbled to 164 all out in their attempt to chase down India’s 319. A victory for the Proteas would go a long way to securing a place in the semifinals (and would certainly prove enough if India defeat Sri Lanka on Thursday), while Pakistan cannot afford another defeat if they are to have realistic hopes of advancing.

In head-to-head terms, the Proteas have dominated Pakistan in ODIs: 72 matches between the teams have seen the African side claim 47 wins compared to 24 for their Asian counterparts. SA have also won both of the teams’ two ODI matches played in England and have a superior record at Edgbaston (4 wins from 7 matches compared to 4 wins from 12 for Pakistan).

Yet Pakistan did claim victory in the teams’ last ODI meeting, a rain-affected group stage match in the 2015 ICC World Cup. They were 222 all out in the first innings in Auckland and claimed a 29-run victory on the D/L method after dismissing the Proteas for 202.
