The top 7 players in the NFL right now

With the 2020 National Football League (NFL) draft on the horizon, it is only apt that we look at the best players in the league right now.

The Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl on the back of a passing clinic from Patrick Mahomes at Hard Rock Stadium in February. Mahomes scooped the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for his efforts, but will he rank above regular season MVP Lamar Jackson on Betway's list?

Without further ado, here follows our top seven players in the NFL right now! Spoiler Alert -- some big names miss out.

7. Christian McCaffrey (Carolina Panthers, Running Back)

No player was arguably as important to their franchise than McCaffrey was to the Panthers last season.

McCaffrey, who earlier this month signed a $64 million contract extension with the Panthers through the 2025 season, accumulated 1,387 rushing yards (3rd most in the 2019-20 regular season) and scored a league high 19 touchdowns.

6. Russel Wilson (Seattle Seahawks, Quarterback)

Were it not for Jackson's breakthrough season, Wilson might have scooped a first MVP award.

Like McCaffrey, the Seahawks quarterback is invaluable to his team and his efficiency hides flaws within the franchises' offence. Wilson notched up 33 passing touchdowns last season to just five intercepts across 18 starts.

5. Stephon Gilmore (New England Patriots, Cornerback)

The AP Defensive Player of the Year made six intercepts and scored two touchdowns in 16 regular season starts last season.

He broke up 13 passes and quarterbacks found it increasing difficult to pick their man when throwing in Gilmore's direction.

4. Michael Thomas (New Orleans Saints, Wide Receiver)

Thomas enjoyed a spectacular and historic individual campaign, setting the record for the most single-season receptions in NFL history.

The wide receiver completed 149 catches and scored nine touchdowns in 15 regular season starts for the Saints on his way to scooping the AP Offensive Player of the Year award.

3. Aaron Donald (Los Angeles Rams, Defensive Tackle)

The two-time Defensive Player of the Year might not have been as devastating as he was in the 2018-19 campaign, but Donald still amassed 12.5 sacks and led the league in tackles for loss with 24 last season.

Ranked as the No. 1 player by his peers in 2019, Donald is valued highly by everyone in the NFL and on his day he is the most devastating player in the league. Uncontainable, you need at least two players blocking the Rams defensive tackle at all times.

2. Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens, Quarterback)

The reigning league MVP enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in which he established himself as a serious run and pass threat in the 2019-20 season.

Jackson led the Ravens to a 13-2 record (he sat out the final game of regular season) with 36 passing touchdowns on 66.1 completion percentage. He threw 3,127 passing yards and rushed for 1,206 yards -- an NFL record for a quarterback -- while he scored seven touchdowns himself.

At 23 years of age, he is the second-youngest player to ever be named MVP while he is also only the second player after Tom Brady in 2010, to receive every vote for the accolade.

1. Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs, Quarterback)

At just 24 years of age, Mahomes has already won the MVP award, Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP accolade after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to the NFL summit in February.

Having watched Jackson throw and run his way to the regular season MVP award, Mahomes turned on the style in the postseason.

Mahomes threw 10 touchdowns on 901 yards in three postseason games, including two passing touchdowns in the Super Bowl itself while he sparked the Chiefs' run to a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers with a rushing touchdown for an all round dominant performance in the biggest game of the season!
