The 2019-20 Premier Soccer League season was suspended in March, with most teams having played 24 of their 30 scheduled matches. We take a closer look at the campaign’s most salient statistics thus far.

404 – The total number of goals scored in the 2019-20 season, averaging out at 2.17 per match. By comparison, the 2018-19 season averaged 2.26 goals per match.

4 – The points lead enjoyed by table-toppers Kaizer Chiefs when the season was suspended. “We need to get creative in discussing certain scenarios to finish the season successfully — using neutral venues‚ playing double-headers to get more games in per week than usual‚ playing games without supporters‚ and so on‚” said Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp, who will be eager to deliver the club’s first silverware since 2015.

54 – The number of scheduled matches remaining in the 2019-20 season.

5-3 – The score line from the two highest-scoring matches of the 2019-20 season. Cape Town City defeated Polokwane City by that score on 6 November 2019, while Kaizer Chiefs beat Bloemfontein Celtic with the same tally on 7 December 2019.

3 – There have been three hat-tricks in the 2019-20 season: one each from the above-mentioned 5-3 matches – Charlton Mashumba for Polokwane City and Samir Nurkovic for Kaizer Chiefs – as well as Frank Mhango’s treble for Orlando Pirates in their 4-1 win over Rise and Shine on 7 January 2020.

14 Frank Mhango has scored 14 goals to be the leading scorer in the top-flight league this season. He is confident that he will hit the ground running if and when the campaign resumes: “It is only football that keeps me busy all the time. So, even if I don't have time to play football on the field of play, when I get back to the pitch the performance will be the same because I have a target to fight [for],” said the Malawian.

66 – If you fancy seeing plenty of goals, watch Bloemfontein Celtic: their 23 matches have produced 66 goals at an average of 2.87 – the highest of any team in the league this season.

85.7 – The percentage of AmaZulu’s goals scored by striker Bonginkosi Ntuli – he has netted 12 of their 14 strikes this season. Usuthu would surely already be doomed to relegation without him.
