Sundowns with the inside lane to title glory

2018/19 Absa Premiership

Round 30

Saturday 11 May 2019

Mamelodi Sundowns have the inside lane to Absa Premiership title glory, with the final round of matches in the 2018/19 season to be played across South Africa on Saturday, 11 May.

The Brazilians, who are the reigning champions, have their fate in their own hands: a win at home to Golden Arrows in a catch-up game on Tuesday 7 May, as well as another three points away to relegation-threatened Free State Stars on Saturday afternoon will see them claim the trophy for a second successive time (and a third time in the last four seasons).

Orlando Pirates captain Happy Jele.

Yet if ‘Downs are unable to pick up back-to-back wins in the space of four days, it could open the door for Orlando Pirates. The Soweto giants are at home to Polokwane City and desperately hoping for an opening to win their first league title since 2011/12.

Elsewhere, the relegation battle will be the primary concern: just two points covers the bottom five teams, two of which will end Saturday afternoon down in the doldrums: 16th place is relegated directly to the National First Division, while 15th enters a three-way playoff competition with the second- and third-placed finishers from the second tier.

Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler.

The key games involving teams at the foot of the table are Baroka FC at home to bottom-of-the-log Maritzburg United (who have, however, won their last two games on the bounce), Stars at home to Sundowns (as mentioned above), Chippa United hosing Kaizer Chiefs (who are battling to finish in the top eight) and Black Leopards (who ironically boast the league’s leading scorer in Mwape Musonda but are placed second to last) at home to Cape Town City.
