2025-26 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 5
Villarreal v Osasuna
Estadio de la Ceramica
Villarreal, Spain
Saturday, 20 September 2025
Kick-off is at 18h30
Villarreal will target a return to winning ways in
La Liga when they host Osasuna at La Ceramica on Saturday, September 20.
The Yellow Submarine were amongst the early frontrunners after going unbeaten in their opening three matches of the new season and picking up seven points.
Marcelino's side had gotten off to a flying start thanks to back-to-back wins against Real Oviedo (2-0) and Girona (5-0) before they dropped points for the first time in a 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo.
The Castellon outfit then tasted their first defeat of the campaign as they lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid upon returning from the international break and have dropped to sixth place. five points adrift of league leaders Real Madrid.
Los Rojillos got back on the winning trail with a 2-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano on September 14, having gone down 1-0 to Espanyol prior to the international break.
Their opening two games had also been settled by a solitary goal after being beaten 1-0 by Los Blancos on August 19 before edging Valencia by the same scoreline five days later.
Marcelino felt his team were still in the game at half-time despite seeing Atletico take an early lead through Pablo Barrios on nine minutes, but admitted a lack of cutting edge in front of goal proved their undoing.
"Barrios' early goal didn't change anything for us. It was a tough blow because of how it happened, but I think we recovered really well. In fact, we had several chances in the first half that could have scored," the Spaniard said.
"We started the second half well, and just when we were dominating, we conceded the second goal. Atleti were extremely effective, although we also had several chances we should have avoided. They had moments of superiority and controlled the game more than we did, and we would have liked to.
"The key to beating Atleti is accuracy, and we didn't have that. We had chances from Alberto Moleiro and Nicolas Pepe, but we didn't convert them."
