2021 Rugby Championship

Round 6

New Zealand v South Africa

Kick-off is at 12h05

South Africa will face off with New Zealand in the sixth and final round of the 2021 Rugby Championship in Gold Coast, Australia on October 02.

The Springboks succumbed to a 19-17 defeat to New Zealand's All Blacks in a nail-biting fifth-round match in Townsville, Australia on September 25.

The world champions suffered the agony of seeing New Zealand fullback Jordie Barrett’s 77th-minute penalty condemn them to a defeat in the 100th meeting between the two teams.

The result saw New Zealand clinch this year's Rugby Championship having won all of their first five matches and they also successfully defended the Freedom Cup.

South Africa, who were the defending champions, are currently placed third on the standings and they will be keen to finish second behind New Zealand.

The Springboks can only finish second if they defeat the All Blacks and the result between second-placed Australia and fourth-placed Argentina goes their way on October 2.

Kwagga Smith, the Springbok flanker, vowed that the team will leave everything on the pitch when they meet New Zealand in their closing clash.

“We definitely have what it takes mentally and physically to push through for another week,” Smith said.

“We were hungry going into Saturday’s game after last week’s performance [the 30-17 defeat against the Wallabies], and I think we played well, but we were a little unlucky.

“We have a good squad here and everyone is positive. It’s the last game before we have a bit of a break, so we’ll give it our all and make sure we leave everything on the pitch.”

The last time South Africa defeated New Zealand was on 15 September 2018.

The Springboks emerged 36-34 winners over the All Blacks in the 2018 Rugby Championship match at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand.
