Matchday 12

Athletic Bilbao v Real Oviedo

Estadio San Mames

Bilbao, Spain

Sunday, 9 November 2025

Kick-off is at 15h00

Athletic Bilbao will be desperate to get their season back on track when they welcome newly-promoted Real Oviedo to San Mames on Sunday, November 9.

The Lions haven't been able to build on their positive start to the campaign which saw them win their opening three matches against Sevilla, Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis.

Ernesto Valverde's side then embarked on a four-game winless run to fall well off the pace in the title race before they stopped the rot with a 2-1 victory over Real Mallorca on October 4.

However, Athletic have only picked up one point from their next three outings and a 3-2 reverse against Real Sociedad on November 1 was their second defeat on the trot.

The Basque outfit are in a three-way tie with Elche (10th) and Rayo (11th) in 12th place ahead of their first league clash with Carbayones in 24 years.

Oviedo have found the going tough since returning to the top flight for the first time in more than two decades, losing seven of their first 10 games.

Veljko Paunovic was sacked as head coach on October 9 and Luis Carrion is still searching for his maiden win after collecting just one point from his first two matches at the helm.

Carrion's side did show some fight as they scored a last-gasp equaliser against fellow strugglers Girona on October 25 to earn a 3-3 draw, although they remain in the relegation zone, two points of safety in 19th position.

Valverde is convinced his team can turn their fortunes around if they continue to graft on the training pitch, having seen some positives in the Basque derby with Sociedad.

"We'll resolve this by working hard. We're not in the situation we'd like to be in, but we have two important matches this week and we'll see if we can turn things around," the Spaniard declared.

"We would loved to have won for our fans, but all we can do is keep trying... Nobody likes to lose derbies. It was a very competitive match.

"But I have to say that today I liked my team in many moments, we managed to equalise twice. There are good things to take away, I don't think the opposition outplayed us."
