Suzuki rider Joan Mir will be keen to secure his maiden MotoGP title by winning the Valencian Grand Prix

The Spanish star sits 37 points ahead of Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha and Suzuki rider Alex Rins in the race to be 2020 world champion.

A podium, no matter where anyone else in the hunt finishes at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, will hand Mir his first premier class title.

Mir, who has been the most consistent rider this season, walked away victorious after clinching the recent European Grand Prix title.

His teammate Rins secured a second spot finish as Suzuki enjoyed a good weekend in Valencia, Spain.

Pol Espargaro of KTM finished third at the European Grand Prix and it was his fourth podium finish of the season.

In the Team Championship, Mir's Suzuki are 82 points ahead of their closest rivals Yamaha.

Suzuki can wrap up that title before the season finale in Portimao, Portugal too, if they are over 45 points ahead after Sunday's chequered flag.

The 23-year-old Mir was delighted after winning the European Grand Prix and he says they need to be intelligent at the Valencian Grand Prix.

“I’m super happy. This (a victory) is what I was missing and it came at the perfect moment,” Mir said.

“We’ve had a very good weekend. Now we need to be more intelligent than ever.

"Even with this victory the championship is not over, but I’m in a much better position than Friday. If I’m not able to fight for the win, scoring points will be enough.”

Suzuki are now placed at the top of Manufacturers' Championship standings with 188 points.

Ducati and Yamaha are placed second and third with 181 and 163 points respectively on the standings..
