DSTV Premiership - Matchday 27

2023/24 DStv Premiership
Matchday 27
7-8 May 2024

With Mamelodi Sundowns having been confirmed DStv Premiership champions, the focus is firmly on the battle for second place with four games remaining in the season.

Stellenbosch are still in pole position as they prepare for the visit of AmaZulu to the Danie Craven Stadium on Tuesday, May 7.

The Maroons maintained the three-point gap to Orlando Pirates with a 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows on May 1 which extended their unbeaten run in the league to an impressive 18 matches. Usuthu suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Richards Bay on April 30, leaving them two points outside the top eight in 12th position.

Stellies head coach Steve Barker believes the race for a top-two finish will go down to the wire as the Buccaneers have improved markedly in the second half of the season, losing just one of their 10 games in 2024.

"Finishing second on the log and playing in the Champions League is our aim," Barker declared. "As you can see, a lot of teams are hitting form at the right time.

"Pirates are playing really well and I believe that even though we lost against Sundowns [in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals], we are playing really well.

"It will go down all the way to the wire and we would like to test ourselves and play in the Champions League."

Orlando Pirates will look to keep the momentum going when they welcome Chippa United to the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday, May 8.

Jose Riveiro's side briefly knocked Stellenbosch off the runners-up spot with a 2-0 triumph over Cape Town City on May 1 to make it four wins on the spin. The Chilli Boys are desperate for revenge after being dumped out of the Nedbank Cup at the hands of the Sea Robbers in the semi-finals on May 4.

Riveiro wants more of the same in the rematch with the Eastern Cape outfit as every point is crucial in the race for a top-two finish.

"We want to be in the second position in the end of the season and to make it possible we know we have to win every point," the Spaniard said.

"I don't think it's going to be something too different than today's game (Nedbank Cup semi-final). Obviously, the reward is different, it's not the same playing for being in the final or the three points, but for us it's another final."

TS Galaxy will look to get their CAF challenge back on track when they lock horns with Kaizer Chiefs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday, May 7.

The Rockets have impressed in the second half of the season to put themselves in the frame to qualify for continental football, but a run of just one win in their last four outings sees them trailing Pirates by eight points in fifth place with a game in hand. Amakhosi will be licking their wounds after being hammered 5-1 by Sundowns on May 2 which was their fourth defeat in five matches.

SuperSport United will be looking to build on their first win of 2024 when they host Sekhukhune United at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Tuesday, May 7.

Matsatsantsa (6th) snapped a nine-game winless sequence as they beat Royal AM 1-0 on May 1 to close within two points of Babina Noko, who shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw with Galaxy on May 3 to remain fourth in the standings.

Elsewhere around the country, Mamelodi Sundowns (1st) travel to the Mpumalanga Stadium for a clash with Golden Arrows (11th), Cape Town City (7th) entertain Moroka Swallows (13th) at the Athlone Stadium, Polokwane City (9th) face Richards Bay (15th) at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium and Royal AM (14th) take on Cape Town Spurs (16th) at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
