Today's Racecards: Mike De Kocks picks

Pomp and Power is all the rage for Saturday’s G1 Daily News over 2000m at Greyville, the prestigious Durban July pointer. Only nine hopefuls have stood their ground and Justin Snaith’s ace three-year-old has been priced up odds-on favourite.

The impressive 2021 G1 Cape Derby winner was green and shifted about in his first run at the Durban track when beaten into third by Zapatillas in the KZN Guineas, but indications are that he benefitted from the experience.

Co-owner Greg Bortz noted this week: “That run would have brought him on. This is the race he has been prepped for and he is absolutely ready. We all know Pomp And Power is a strong horse and he can be a bit of a handful so the biggest threat to him winning is himself. But when you've got Richard Fourie aboard you can be cautiously optimistic."

With Pomp and Power’s main danger Safe Passage considered to be just short of his best, the connections of the favourite have every right to be bullish. Mike de Kock said about Safe Passage and stable companion Aragosta: “They’re both doing well and they’ll come into the race fresh, but they’re just a margin short of their best. I’m using the race as a stepping stone.”

There has been talk all week for Vaughan Marshall’s runner Senso Unico, but he is well held on Cape Derby form and will probably contest place money alongside Joe Soma’s raider, Red Saxon.

The G2 Woolavington 2000 is the main attraction on the undercard and most punters seem to be in the camp of Light Of The Moon, who ran champion filly Rain In Holland to three-quarters of a length in the Oaks. Light Of The Moon, if successful, will give trainer Barend Botes a deserved first G1 winner, but there are a few others with chances including Snaith’s filly Silver Darling and Candice Dawson’s consistent high-level performer, Perfect Witness.

De Kock has entered two runners for the meeting scheduled for Greyville this evening and commented: Run As One is fit and well for Race 5. If he enjoys the Polytrack - and I’m hoping he will - he will be competitive tonight, so include him. Power Ranger is in Race 8, he placed at this track last time, but he doesn’t have a good draw. If he can overcome that he’ll have a chance of being in the finish.”
