The 2023 Players Championship is set to be played at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida between 9 and 12 March. 
 
What to know about the tournament 
 
The event was originally known as the Tournament Players Championship having begun in 1974 and it is owned by the PGA Tour, and not an official tournament on other tours.
 
The 2023 event is the 50th edition as the 2020 tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the field usually includes the top 50 players in the world rankings.
 
Dubbed the fifth major despite not being a major, the Players Championship is often regarded as the next most prestigious tournament in golf.
 
Tournament News
 
The 2023 Players Championship will feature 144-player field representation from 20 countries, but the defending champion Cameroon Smith will be absent having joined LIV Golf.
 
While 49 of the top 50 players in the current FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List (all but No. 27 Ben Taylor) will be part of the field. 
 
Furthermore, 43 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), eight Players Champions including 2018 winner Webb Simpson will all be present. 
 
Favourites 
 
This year's field is headlined by the likes of Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler who are the three best golfers in the world at the moment.
 
Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris, Max Homa, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa who are in the top 10 on the OWGR will also be eyeing the main prize.
 
All 14 players that have won on PGA Tour in the current 2022-23 season will be part of the field and they will be looking to achieve more success.

What Is At Stake 
 
The event will offer Official World Golf Ranking points to the winner, with final points ratings determined ahead of the tournament teeing off on Thursday. 
 
The field will be playing for a $25 million purse - making it the biggest purse of the year and the winner's share is $4.5 million.
 
The winner will also lift a trophy, which has a gold full-bodied figure of a golfer at the top.

The Players Championship management have commented on the absence of the defending champion Smith.
 
“He’s one of our champions and history speaks for itself,” Players Championship executive director Jared Rice told Golf Digest in a statement. 
 
“The play of all of our past champions speaks for itself. But 2023 is about the players who will be here.”
