2022/23 English Premier League

Matchday 27

Manchester United v Southampton

Old Trafford
Manchester, England
Sunday, 12 March 2023
Kick-off is at 16h00

Manchester United will look to put last weekend's disappointment behind them when Southampton visit Old Trafford on Sunday, March 12.

The Red Devils went into their clash with Liverpool on a high after beating Barcelona In the Europa League and lifting the EFL Cup with victory against Newcastle.

However, they were brought crashing back down to earth at Anfield as the Reds ran riot to emerge 7-0 victors over their fierce rivals, scoring six goals in the second half.

Erik ten Hag's side are now eight points adrift of Manchester City (2nd) and a further four behind Premier League leaders Arsenal in third place with a game in hand.

United remain four points clear of Tottenham, however, after they slipped up in a 1-0 defeat at Wolves last Saturday.

The Saints finally climbed off the foot of the table with a 1-0 triumph over Leicester at St Mary's, which was their second win in three games.

Ruben Selles' team overtook Bournemouth into 19th spot by virtue of a superior goal difference, with both clubs tied on 21 points, one behind Everton (18th) and Leeds (17th).

Southampton haven't beaten United in the league since 23 January 2016 when Charlie Austin's 87th-minute goal secured a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Casemiro has become an important cog in the United machine after getting his career off to a slow start in Manchester. The Brazilian midfielder has contributed two goals and three assists in 18 league appearances, although he recently served a three-match suspension for his red card against Crystal Palace before returning for the mauling on Merseyside.

James Ward-Prowse has been an ever present for the south coast outfit this term and he's scored some important goals to aid his club's fight for survival. There is no better dead-ball specialist in the game right now as the 28-year-old midfielder scored the winner against Chelsea on February 18 to close within one of David Beckham's record of 18 free-kicks in the Premier League.

In team news, the hosts have no new injury problems, with Donny van de Beek (knee), Christian Eriksen (ankle) and Anthony Martial (groin) still ruled out, while Juan Larios (muscular), Carlos Alcaraz (knee) and Valentino Livramento (muscular) are missing for the visitors.

Ten Hag has backed his players to bounce back from their horror show last Sunday, insisting they must learn from the setback at Anfield.

"[The bad days] are the days [that] if you do the right things, if you react with the right messages as a manager and as a team, you can learn a lot from it," the Dutchman said. "You can strengthen your mentality."

Speaking to MUTV, he added: "We have to reset. But we will do [that]. I know my players, they are good characters, they can bounce back and they will do."
