South Africa v Netherlands

South Africa will be at full strength when they face the Netherlands in the first of two must-win One Day Internationals at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Friday, March 31.

The Proteas are looking to qualify automatically for the 2023 World Cup and they need to beat the Dutch in both matches without any over-rate penalties to make it happen.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams since South Africa lost to the Netherlands at the T20 World Cup in Australia four months ago, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.

Rob Walter's side recently concluded a three-match series against the West Indies, which was drawn 1-1 with the first ODI having been washed out.

Heinrich Klaasen was named joint player of the series alongside Windies skipper Shai Hope following his superb knock of 119 not out from just 61 balls in the third ODI.

Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the Proteas bowlers after taking five wickets in the two encounters, with three coming in the second ODI and two in the third ODI.

The Dutch arrive in South Africa on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Zimbabwe this month, having won the first ODI by three wickets before succumbing in the subsequent two matches.

However, they will be without several key players; Colin Ackermann, Brandon Glover and Bas de Leede all have English County commitments, while Logan van Beek is in New Zealand and Roelof van der Merwe was forced to withdraw from the squad.

Frontline bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje make their return to the Proteas squad after the duo were rested for the series against the West Indies.

Commenting on the players selected, Walters said: "We have named our strongest possible squad for these games given the importance of these matches in the context of qualifying for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

"We have a job to do and I am confident that with this group of players we can get the job done."

South Africa have yet to lose to the Netherlands in the 50-over format, although their previous series in 2021 had to be scrapped due to COVID-19 after the first ODI was washed out.
