The race for this season's European Golden Boot has been exhilarating with the best strikers competing for the award.

The coveted accolade is given to the top goalscorer from the top five European leagues during a season.

We take a look at the leading goalscorers in Europe's top five leagues - Serie A, Premier League, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and La Liga.

Wissam Ben Yedder - AS Monaco & Kylian Mbappe - PSG

Ligue 1 Goals: 18

French forward Ben Yedder totalled 71 goals in 174 games for Toulouse, surpassing André-Pierre Gignac as their greatest Ligue 1's scorer of the 21st century.

Ben Yedder's first season with AS Monaco was curtailed in early March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and the season has since been cancelled.

However, the quick forward finished the campaign as joint top scorer alongside Paris Saint Germain (PSG)'s Mbappe with 18 goals, a new record for him in Ligue 1.

Mbappe, 21, is already considered to be one of the best players in the world having won the Ligue 1 Golden Boot award twice.

"Mbappe is the future and the present," Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo said in a promotional video shared by Marca.

"He's a fantastic player, very fast, and he will be the future."

Jamie Vardy - Leicester City

Premier League Goals: 19

The Leicester City frontman remains one of the best strikers in England and is the only player to have scored in eleven consecutive Premier League matches.

Vardy finds himself at the top of the Premier League's goalscoring charts with 19 goals, with his closest rival Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal on 17 goals.

The 33-year-old player, who is known for his high work rate, relentless running and direct approach, is keen to win the league's Golden Boot award for the first time.

Lionel Messi - FC Barcelona

La Liga Goals: 19

The FC Barcelona superstar remains the best footballer in the world having won last year's Ballon d'Or accolade.

Considered by some as one of the greatest players of all time, Messi is sitting at the top of the Spanish La Liga's goalscoring charts with 19 goals.

The Argentine football icon has won the Golden Shoe a record six times and is looking to clinch it for the fourth time in a row this season.

Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski - Bayern Munich

Bundesliga Goals: 25

The Polish marksman is widely regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation having enjoyed a lot of success with Bayern Munich.

Lewandowski is the top goalscorer in the German Bundesliga with 25 goals, while RB Leipzig's Timo Werner is four goals behind him.

The 32-year-old player is a traditional number nine, who has height, strength, pace and proficiency with both feet, and he is keen to win the Golden Shoe for the first time.

"I think in the Bundesliga, Lewandowski is the best striker, for me," FC Augsburg star Alfred Finnbogason said about Lewandowski on Bundesliga's official website.

"For years he has shown his class again and again. In Europe there are many strikers who are really, really good, and nice to watch."

Ciro Immobile - Lazio

Serie A Goals: 27

The prolific Italian centre forward has arguably been the best striker in Europe thus far this season while on the books of Lazio.

Immobile is sitting at the top of the Italian Serie A's goalscoring charts with 27 goals - six above his closest rival Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus.

The 30-year-old player's main characteristics are his eye for goal and finishing ability with either foot. He looks destined to win the Golden Shoe.
