Charles Leclerc can take heart from Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz's drive in the Canadian Grand Prix as they prepare for the British Grand Prix on Sunday, July 3.

Sainz pushed Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen all the way in Montreal a fortnight ago to finish just 0.993 seconds behind the reigning World Champion in second place.

Leclerc started at the back of the grid due to engine penalties, but he still managed to finish fifth to put the disappointment of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix behind him.

The Monegasque has seen Ferrari suffer numerous reliability issues of late following a flying start to the season, where they claimed five podium finishes in the opening three rounds.

Leclerc had led the drivers' standings by 46 points at one stage, although the recent problems with the car means he is 49 points behind current leader Max Verstappen after nine races.

The 24-year-old had been aware of his 10-place grid penalty in the Canadian Grand Prix for some time, according to team boss Mattia Binotto.

"It's something we decided very soon after Baku, so it's something he was aware of for many days," Binotto was quoted as saying by The Race.

"So he had time to digest and be prepared for the race weekend. He was focusing on his race weekend knowing that he would have started from the back of the grid.

"Even his Friday programme, Saturday programme was focused on the high-fuel runs, just to make sure that he was prepared for the race itself."
