Jose Mourinho comes up against another former team

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho will come up against another of his former teams when Spurs host London rivals Chelsea on Sunday 22 December 2019, kick-off at 18:30.

The match is one of nine spread over 21-22 December in the 18th round of the current Premier League season, with Liverpool’s match away to West Ham United postponed due to the former’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Spurs’ last match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ended in an emphatic 5-0 win over Burnley earlier this month, featuring a brace from Harry Kane and a spectacular solo goal from Son Heung-Min, who will again be a key player for the Lilywhites.

Chelsea have suffered a wobble in form of late, with their last two away matches in the Premier League bringing losses at the hands of Manchester City and Everton.

Manager Frank Lampard says he still has complete faith in the youngsters at the club, insisting that inconsistency is just a part of the journey as the team learns their path. “I think you can be defined as an individual and as a group by success and what success looks like,” said Lampard, who will nonetheless demand a passionate showing from his charges.

In head-to-head stats, Tottenham and Chelsea have met in 146 previous matches. The Blues have claimed 63 wins compared to 48 for Spurs, while 35 games have been drawn.

The teams’ two Premier League clashes last season both produced home wins: Tottenham triumphed 3-1 at Wembley Stadium in November 2018, while the return game at Stamford Bridge was won 2-0 by the Blues in February 2019.
