Betway’s three-and-a-half year sponsorship of Mike de Kock and De Kock Racing comes to an end this weekend, and Mike commented: “I wish to thank Betway, and in particular Laurence Michel and Jonathan Bloomberg for their wonderful promotion of and support for De Kock Racing.
“Betway’s sponsorship included a variety of uplifting things, including beautiful branding and gear and bonuses for our grooms and our horses, and our stable’s soccer team. We are privileged to have been involved as ambassadors for a company of this stature. Aside from their support for our yard, Betway has also done an incredible job in their advancement of Gauteng racing, for which the whole industry remains thankful.”
The De Kock stable has no runners on
WSB Cape Town Met weekend, but Mathew de Kock provided a pointer to their next runner at the Vaal next Thursday, 5 February. He said: “
Special Star (Race 5, 1800m), pulled hard in her comeback run, so we’ve taken the blinkers off her. She has improved at home and should improve on the racetrack, so has a money chance.”
Below, some valuable pointers to the R5-million WSB Cape Town Met and other features at HWB Kenilworth on Saturday.
Jockey Andrew Fortune rides the well-backed favourite
See It Again (3.50 to 1 on Betway’s boards) in the Cape Met. He said: “See It Again is a proper horse, as good as his stablemate Eight On Eighteen. Riding him is like driving a CLK Mercedes Benz. I hope there is a true pace in the race because I think a good pace will help us to beat Dean Kannemeyer’s runner
The Real Prince, who will run everything down if the early pace is slow.
“See It Again is easy to ride now that he has learnt to jump from the pens again. I leave him alone, he tells me when he is ready to go, in a race. His work has been outstanding and I give him a 9/10 winning chance.
Happy Verse (Race 9, 1600m) is probably my best ride on the day by short head over See It Again. You can banker him, and
Double Grand Slam (Race 7, 1600m), will also be hard to beat.”
Trainer Justin Snaith more or less agreed with Fortune in all respects, and pointed to several other runners with big chances on the day. Considering that Snaith saddled a world record eight winners on this day in 2016, another hugely successful day is possible.
Snaith and Fortune highlighted the chance of Muzi Yeni’s ride
Powerandtheglory (Race 6, 1400m), who found market support earlier in the week (7-1 into 6-1) and seems to be the stable’s preferred runner ahead of the favourite
Great Plains, who faces a deep draw.
Snaith said that he thinks the world of Happy Verse, that he could be a Cape Derby or July horse for 2026, but that Race 9 is an opportunity for him to step up and prove that he is the real deal.
It is interesting to note that Fortune didn’t give
Be Merry (Race 10, 1200m) much of a chance, but Snaith cautioned that she’s a filly that can surprise. “We’ve worked on a few things with her, she could run a big race,” said Snaith. At 21-1 with Betway, she certainly offers value.
Snaith was also bullish about
Smarten Up (Race 12, 1600m) and said: “He went too wide last time. He is drawn wide again, but if Callan Murray can overcome the draw, he will be the horse to beat.” Smarten Up is another that’s easy to back around 7-1 with Betway.
