Betway Premiership - Sekhukhune United v Mamelodi Sundowns

2024/25 Betway Premiership

Matchday 10

Sekhukhune United v Mamelodi Sundowns

New Peter Mokaba Stadium

Polokwane, South Africa

Tuesday, 27 January 2026

Kick-off is at 19h30

Mamelodi Sundowns will be aiming to keep their near spotless record against Sekhukhune United intact when they lock horns at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday, January 27.

The Brazilians have yet to lose to Babina Noko in the Betway Premiership, winning seven of their previous eight meetings and dropping points just once - a 1-1 draw in Polokwane on 20 August 2022.

Miguel Cardoso's side kick-off the new year on a positive note after beating Orbit College 2-0 on January 19, having brought the curtain down on 2025 with a 1-1 draw against Siwelele on December 3.

The success against the Mswenko Boyz extended their unbeaten run in the league to five matches and took Bafana Ba Style back to the top of the table on goal difference ahead of Orlando Pirates.

This, after the Buccaneers were held to a goalless stalemate by Sekhukhune on January 24, although they do still have a game in hand on the league leaders.

Eric Tinkler's side will be looking to get their title challenge back on track after winning just one of their last five outings and picking up only six points in the process.

That run has seen the Limpopo outfit slip to fifth place, three points adrift of the summit, having played one and two matches more than Masandawana and Pirates respectively.

Speaking after the clash with Bucs, Tinkler admitted that performances against the teams below them in the standings haven't been nearly good enough as his players don't have the same winning mentality as their title rivals.

"The frustration I have is that I know the players will pitch up for these games, but the smaller teams are the teams we struggle against," he said.

"Difference between ourselves and Pirates is Pirates play a game every week with teams wanting to beat them, and they have the mentality that every game is a cup final.

"Why is that the case? The expectation is for them to win leagues. Our players aren't at that stage."

Cardoso is demanding an improvement from his players after they squandered numerous chances in a 202 draw with Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League on January 23.

"We had total control of the match. I think the story of the game is obviously the number of goals that we could have scored and how we were naive when we suffered both the first and second goals," the Portuguese said.

"And if you don't score with the chances you have, you will be penalised by that. The players need to understand that when we give them chances, they must take them. When a player plays at Sundowns and has a chance, he should grab it."
