2021/22 Spanish La Liga

Matchday 20

Sevilla v Getafe

Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan
Seville, Spain
Sunday, 9 January 2022
Kick-off is at 17h15

Sevilla will be looking to keep the momentum going in La Liga when they welcome Getafe to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on January 9.

The Andalusian outfit kicked off the New Year with a 1-0 win at Cadiz on January 3 after their final fixture of 2021 against Barcelona ended in a 1-1 draw.

Real Madrid's shock 1-0 loss to Azulones allowed Julen Lopetegui's side to close within five points of the league leaders with a game in hand.

After watching Los Nervionenses extend their unbeaten run in the league to five matches, Lopetegui hailed their 12th win of the season on the back of a challenging week.

"It's an important win, we've got three points against a dangerous opponent. We defended really well against them, we waited for our chance and we took advantage of it," he said.

"We've had a very difficult month and a half. We haven't got many options in attack and we've only been able to work with a few players this week because of COVID."

Getafe have given themselves every chance of staying up this term after the victory over Los Blancos on January 2 took them two points clear of the relegation zone in 16th place.

Quique Sanchez Flores' team are now undefeated in their last six outings and will be chasing a third straight win.

Flores praised their resilience against Real last time out and wants to see more of that during the second half of the campaign.

"We have an important fighting spirit. In the most difficult moments, at the beginning, we decided that we could go out working hard and that we had to convince ourselves of an idea," he said.

"Resilience was the word then and it will be in the future. Today we had to decide where to throttle. You cannot eliminate 11 players from Real Madrid.

"We decided that Kroos, Modric and Casemiro, was the place to strangle them and make them feel uncomfortable. They have not disappointed me."
