South Africa will take on Australia in the first match of their three-match Test series in Brisbane between 17–21 December 2022.

The Proteas are coming into this encounter having drawn Cricket Australia XI in a warm-up match which was played between 9–12 December 2022.

The Proteas had set Cricket Australia 426 runs to win at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on day four with Dean Elgar making 109 runs.

However, both sides agreed on an early finish just before tea with the hosts 6-184 in their second innings on Monday, December 12.

Proteas batsman Theunis de Bruyn has stated that playing Test cricket in Australia is the 'Holy Grail' for South African cricketers.

"We'll see what the starting eleven is. From the previous times I've played, I've matured not just as a cricketer but as a person as your perspective of life changes a bit," De Bruyn told reporters on Sunday.

"If I get the opportunity to play, I really want to take it in and enjoy the occasion. As a child, you dream of playing for the Proteas and the Holy Grail is playing a series Down Under."

Meanwhile, the Baggy Greens are coming into Test Series having defeated West Indies by 419 runs in second Test, retaining Frank Worrell Trophy 2-0 on Sunday, December 11.

Travis Head was named Player of the Match after he reached a career best 175 and he will be looking to replicate the same form when he faces the Proteas.

South Africa and Australia have met 98 times in Test matches.

Australia have dominated this rivalry having won 52 matches compared to South Africa's 26 wins, while 20 matches ended in a draw.
