Mzansi Super League set for thrilling finale

2019 Mzansi Super League

3-16 December review/preview

The 2019 Mzansi Super League will wrap up with its two final matches this coming long weekend, following the completion of the league phase in midweek.

The last league phase match takes place on the evening of Tuesday 10 December at Kingsmead, with the Durban Heat needing to defeat bottom-of-the-log Jozi Stars to move into third place and secure a berth in the Eliminator (semifinal) against the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants on Friday 13 December.

However, with rainy weather predicted in Durban, it’s likely that the Heat will record a fifth ‘No Result’ and end in fourth spot, leaving the Tshwane Spartans to head to St George’s Park to take on the Giants. The Spartans themselves had two games abandoned in the past week, with the weather playing havoc with South Africa’s domestic T20 competition.

The final will then be played at Boland Park on the public holiday of Monday 16 December, with Paarl Rocks enjoying home advantage for the big clash.

The Rocks secured their place at the top of the log – and automatic qualification for the final – thanks to a 12-run win over the Giants on Sunday 8 December. A quick-fire 39 from batsman Cameron Delport helped them post 168/5 in their 20 overs, before restricting the Eastern Cape side to 156/6, with Ferisco Adams claiming 3/36.

Rocks captain Faf du Plessis is delighted to his team battling for major honours and believes it will be a great chance for Paarl to prove that it should be home to more major cricket going forward.

"The competition is not producing a lot of big crowds, we are so grateful for the people in Paarl, I know they're hungry for cricket,” explained the Proteas skipper.

"It's not easy coming to watch every game of cricket, it takes a bit of effort and you can watch it on TV but we've really got some passionate fans."

He added, “"But what's happening over the last two years in Boland cricket, you can see how big this is and a step in the right direction.”
