Maritzburg United and Cape Town City will complete the quarterfinals of the 2018 MTN8 when they meet at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday, 12 August, kick-off at15h00.

Maritzburg earned their place in the 11th edition of the ‘Wafa-Wafa’ by finishing fourth on the Absa Premiership log in 2017/18. The KwaZulu-Natal side were semifinalists in last year’s MTN8, eliminating Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarterfinals before succumbing 3-1 on aggregate to eventual champions SuperSport United.

The Team of Choice have never won the Top Eight cup, but they came close to claiming the Nedbank Cup at the end of last season, losing out to Free State Stars in the final in May 2018, and they will hope to take that form into this campaign.

City’s place in this year’s MTN8 was secured with a fifth-place finish in the 2017/18 top flight. The Cape side will be playing in the ‘Wafa-Wafa’ for a third successive year.

Their debut in 2016 saw the Citizens eliminated in the semifinals by Bidvest Wits (3-0 on aggregate), while last year they reached the final and held SuperSport United 1-1, only to be beaten on post-match penalties (4-2). This year the Cape side will looking to go one step further and claim the trophy for the first time.

In head-to-head stats, this will be the first cup meeting of Maritzburg and City. The teams have clashed in four league matches since the Cape Town club’s formation at the start of the 2016/17 season. In that campaign, the Citizens defeated the Team of Choice 3-2 in the ‘Mother City’, but suffered a 1-0 defeat in the return game in Pietermaritzburg.

Last season’s league clashes saw the KwaZulu-Natal team claim an impressive 4-2 ‘away’ win over City (though the match was actually played at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KZN due to a lack of available venues in the Western Cape), before the return game at Harry Gwala Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw.
