Chippa’s Quest to Outsmart the Students

2018/19 ABSA Premiership

Chippa United vs Bidvest Wits

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
Friday, April 12th
Kick-off at 20:00 (8pm) CAT

Bidvest Wits have seen their title aspirations almost fall by the waist-side in recent weeks but they will have a shot at getting their challenge back on track when they travel to the windy city of PE to tackle in-form Chippa United.

The Clever Boys are currently in third place on the ABSA Premiership log, 6 points behind leaders Orlando Pirates who beat Black Leopards 2-0 on Wednesday, although they have 2 matches in hand still to play over their rivals.

A win by two or more goals on Friday evening could see Gavin Hunt’s chargers leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns into second-place, on goal difference, with Masandawana not in action again until the Tshwane Derby against Supersport United on April 17th.

The Chilli Boys are unbeaten in their last three matches in all competitions which included a dramatic penalty shootout victory over this weekend’s opponents, Bidvest Wits, following a scintillating 4-4 draw in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup just a fortnight ago. They are still embroiled in a real relegation dogfight however, locked level on points with Baroka and Free State Stars, just four clear of bottom-club Maritzburg United.

30/03 – Wits 4-4 Chippa* (NC)
17/03 – Chippa 1-1 Highlands

Wits have notched up just a solitary league win in their last six matches since beating Maritzburg United at the start of February. During that period, both of their Nedbank Cup ties against Black Leopards and Chippa United went to penalties respectively, meaning their 4-2 turnaround against Bloemfontein Celtic prior to the international break, is the only outing from their last nine in all competitions where they have managed a positive result inside 90 minutes.

Chippa have won just one of the previous eight top-flight encounters with Wits when Samuel Julies scored a second-half brace at the Bidvest Stadium last season.

The reverse fixture of this campaign, played in December, saw the home side return the favour with a 2-0 win of their own courtesy of goals either side of half-time from Lehlohonolo Majoro and Thabang Monare.

The last two to be played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium between the duo have both ended in draws.

Kristopher Bergman equalised for Chippa after Vincent Pule had put the visitors in front in the corresponding fixture last season.
