The Absa Premiership will see 10 matches played over four days from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 August 2020, but it is the meeting of the two title contenders, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, which will garner the majority of attention.

The Amakhosi and the Brazilians will clash at the Orlando Stadium on Thursday evening, with the latter hoping to draw level on points with a win and set up an epic finale in the title race. The teams have struggled for form of late (one win in their last five for both) but ‘Downs have momentum on their side after a last-gasp win over Golden Arrows on Monday, and Chiefs will be without their leading scorer, Samir Nurkovic, due to suspension.

“It is a huge loss, there is no doubt about it,” said Chiefs manager Ernst Middendorp of the Serbian’s absence. “At the moment, we must look at how to find a solution, as we know, certain players in particular in the forward movement, are not on their best. Let me try to find solutions inside the squad we have, in which way we can strategise it, but it is definitely something that it is very painful for us.”

The weekend’s action opens on Friday with Stellenbosch looking to keep up their solid form with a clash at home to Chippa United, while Saturday’s early games are headlined by a stuttering Orlando Pirates at home to SuperSport United – the Buccaneers have gone six matches without a win and the pressure is starting to grow on coach Josef Zinnbauer.

Saturday’s evening game sees Cape Town City aiming to shoot down Golden Arrows at Ellis Park, with striker Kermit Erasmus hoping to add to the 12 goals he has scored this season and chase down current ‘Golden Boot’ leader Frank Mhango (14).

Sunday sees Chiefs and Sundowns back in action, as they face Bidvest Wits (away) and Baroka FC (home) respectively, while Polokwane City’s battle against relegation takes them to Tuks Stadium to take on Bloemfontein Celtic.
