Atletico have never won the Champions League title, but they finished as runners-up three times and they will be hoping to go all the way, and clinch their maiden trophy this year.

Meanwhile, Liverpool eased into the Round of 16 after finishing at the top of Group E ahead of Italian outfit SSC Napoli.

The English giants have tasted only one defeat on the road in this season's competition and they defeated RB Salzburg, and KRC Genk in the other away matches.

Sadio Mane in action for Liverpool.

They are the defending champions having won last season's title and they are now looking to lift the trophy for the seventh time this year.

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, is expecting a tough match as they return to the Wanda Metropolitano where they defeated Tottenham Hotspur in last year's final.

“Madrid is the place where we only have fantastic memories, all of us, so that’s great, but this time we play Atletico there and it’s their home ground," Klopp said.

“It will be a tough game. Two teams who are used to playing intense football, different styles and slightly different organisation of course, but both are ready for intensity and that makes it pretty tough for both.”

The last time Atletico hosted Liverpool in a competitive match was on the 22nd of April 2010.

Atletico secured a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the UEFA Europa League match at the Estadio Vincente Calderon.
