Mamelodi Sundowns will target top spot in the Betway Premiership when they face hosts Polokwane City at the Seshego Stadium on the evening of Wednesday 29 April, kick-off at 19:30 CAT.
Sundowns played out a 0-0 draw with Richards Bay on Sunday evening, a result which left them one point behind leaders Orlando Pirates, but with this single game in hand, as they look to reclaim pole position in their race to win a ninth successive league title.
However, the draw with Bay came after a 1-1 stalemate with Stellenbosch FC last midweek and marked the first time in almost two years that the Brazilians failed to win in back-to-back league matches.
“Difficult match as expected, what we saw on the pitch, a lot of duels, very difficult pitch to play, we knew that other teams were not able to win here for some reason,” head coach Miguel Cardoso said.
The Portuguese added, “We didn’t score here and there and then of course we took the responsibility of trying to shift the victory in the last stages and we exposed ourselves so that’s what it is."
Polokwane come into the match in good form: they have put together a four-game unbeaten run and moved into sixth place on Sunday with a 1-0 home win over Stellenbosch – secured by an injury-time strike from Manuel Kambala.
In head-to-head stats, Polokwane and Sundowns have met in 18 league matches dating back as far as the 2013-14 season. The Brazilians have claimed 10 wins compared to four for Rise and Shine, while four games have been drawn.
When the teams met in the Betway Premiership earlier this season, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in November 2025, Sundowns won 2-0 thanks to a brace from Kutlwano Letlhaku.
