First leg

Manchester City v Bayern Munich

Manchester City will be looking to progress beyond the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the third time in six years when they lock horns with Bayern Munich in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, April 11.

The Citizens were eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual winners Real Madrid last season, having lost to Premier League rivals Chelsea in the 2020-21 final.

Pep Guardiola's side dispatched RB Leipzig with relative ease in the last 16, running riot with a 7-0 victory in England after being held to a 1-1 draw in Germany three weeks earlier.

City are unbeaten in 11 matches across all competitions and have won their last seven games on the spin to remain in contention for silverware on three fronts. They have reached the FA Cup semi-finals and trail Premier League leaders Arsenal by eight points in second place.

The Reds have an outstanding record in Europe's elite club competition as three-time winners of the European Cup (1974, 1975, 1976) and the Champions League (2001, 2013, 2020).

Only Real Madrid have contested more finals than Bayern, who are tied with AC Milan for 11 appearances made, although they haven't gone further than the last eight since lifting the coveted trophy three years ago.

Thomas Tuchel's men overcame Paris Saint-German in the first knockout round, winning 1-0 in France before triumphing 2-0 in Germany to advance to the quarter-finals for the four year running.

In team news, Guardiola has an almost fully-fit squad at his disposal, with just Phil Foden (appendix) unavailable, while Tuchel must do without Manuel Neuer (broken leg), Mathys Tel (groin) and Lucas Hernandez (ACL).

Erling Haaland become only the third player to score five goals in a Champions League game when City thrashed the Red Bulls, and his latest achievement left Guardiola purring.

"Five goals, what can I say?" the Spaniard remarked. "I said many times, he's a joyful guy. His mood in the locker room is always happiness.

"He is a gift to all of us. He is a huge competitor, his mentality is there. He scored five goals which is not easy.

"If he achieves this milestone at 22, his life will be boring! Now he has a target to do it in the future."

Joao Cancelo joined the Bavarian giants on a six-month loan from City during the January transfer window and is in line to face his parent club in Europe. The Portuguese full-back believes and Tuchel's squad has what it takes to beat the English champions and go all the way in the competition.

"There are three, four or five clubs that stand out - and Bayern are amongst them of course. Teams like Bayern, Manchester City and Real Madrid are always difficult to beat and are favourites to win the Champions League every year.

"It's an honour for me to be here. We can compete with anyone. We can beat every team."
