Victor Matfield is one of the best locks to have ever played for South Africa and also had a long and successful career with local teams such as Bulls and the Blue Bulls to name a few. He now joins the Betway Squad as an ambassador who is sure to add invaluable insight and experience to the team.
Career
Dubbed as “Die koning van die lynstaan”, Matfield started his rugby career at the University of Pretoria where he made his debut at the age of 21. It did not take long for him to be scouted and selected for the Blue Bulls under 21 side.
After leaving the Blue Bulls, he quickly proved his worth at the Griquas and went on to don the jersey of several teams such as the Blue Bulls, Cats and the Northampton Saints towards the twilight of his career.
Achievements
Undoubtedly, one of his most notable achievements was winning the
Rugby World Cup with the national squad in 2007. Throughout his career, he established himself as a master at disrupting opposition line-outs, a vital skill that proved priceless and became the cornerstone of the Springboks’ success at the World Cup, en route to winning the coveted individual Player of the Tournament award.
He also lifted the Currie Cup three times with Blue Bulls, he won the Super Rugby three times with the Bulls, a two-time Tri-Nations winner plus a British and Irish Lions test winner.
His trophy cabinet is proof of an illustrious career and we’ll probably never see a player of his ilk and class again.
