South Africa’s Absa Premiership returned this week with two key matches on Tuesday and Wednesday, but it will kick into top gear in the coming days, with nine matches spread from Friday 14 to Monday 17 August 2020.

The action gets underway on Friday afternoon with a key clash for Chippa United and Cape Town City at Orlando Stadium, with both teams looking to keep themselves clear of the relegation scrap below them.

Chippa have a new coach in the form of Lehlohonolo Seema, who has impressed with his players’ work ethic in the build-up to their return to competitive action: “It’s a group [team] that is willing to work and that is the first positive thing. We need to work hard as a group,” said the Chilli Boys’ new boss.

Friday also sees title hopefuls Mamelodi Sundowns away to Highlands Park in an evening game at Dobsonville Stadium, before log leaders Kaizer Chiuefs have the chance to respond on Saturday afternoon when they face Polokwane City at Loftus Stadium as one of four matches through the day.

This includes a relegation six-pointer when AmaZulu host Baroka at Lucas Moripe Stadium, with Usuthu looking to lift themselves out of the red zone. “I think for these six games remaining, it will be about who wants it more than the other, the fight that you put out on the field that counts,” said AmaZulu interim coach Ayanda Dlamini.

Saturday will also see Stellenbosch host Golden Arrows at Tuks Stadium, before the day is rounded out with possibly the last ever clash between Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits, with the latter club having sold its franchise status to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila during the lockdown.

Sunday is headlined by bottom-of-the-log Black Leopards fighting for their lives in a clash with Maritzburg United at FNB Stadium, while Bloemfontein Celtic will high on confidence for their visit to SuperSport United at the Bidvest Stadium, having earned a place in the Nedbank Cup final last weekend.

Monday 17 August then brings a potential thriller between Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld, with the Citizens and the Brazilians having the tendency to bring the best out of each other in past clashes.
