The origins of tennis
The origins of tennis are hotly contested, but the modern game that we know was popularized in England in the 19th century and is now played in a host countries around the world. In the 18th century, England adopted this sport, leading to the kick-off of the first Wimbledon tournament in 1877.
There are four top tournaments in tennis called the Grand Slam Tournaments and these are often the most competitive and best games to bet on. These are Wimbledon, the US Open, The Australian Open, and the French Open. Millions of people watch these tournaments making tennis a great spectator sport as well. Recently, tennis was added to the Olympics as an official sport.
To summarise the sport itself, tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Singles is far more popular and the top sportsmen of tennis are often considered massive celebrities. Consider Nadal, Federer, the Williams’s sisters and greats like Steffi Graf and Pete Sampras.
The modern form of tennis is maintained by a number of different governing bodies who host tournaments under their own names. The ITF is the (International Tennis Federation) is the governing body of world tennis and is made up of 205 national associations. They are responsible for 3 major national competitions that fans enjoy betting on, the Davis Cup, the Fed Cup and the Hopman Cup.
The other well-known association is the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and it was formed in 1972 with the purpose of protecting the interests of male tennis players. Since 1990, the ATP has been actively involved in organizing the worldwide tennis tour for men. They organize a range of different tournaments at different levels throughout each season and are likely the reason that there’s always so much tennis to bet on. In contrast to the ATP, the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) specifically protects the interests of female players and was formed in 1973.
