Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: Turffontein

With nine runners carded, Mike de Kock and his team will have another busy day saddling for the meeting at Turffontein’s inside track on Saturday. He’s stepping out a couple that can win and a few others prepping for major features.

Here are Mike’s comments for Turffontein:

Race 1, 1200m: “We fancied Woman Of Power last time and she looked like she had her race in the bag until she was passed late. She’s doing very well, has come on with that run and on paper looks the one to beat. She is drawn wide, but I feel she is a filly with ability that should go close.”

Race 2, 1200m: “Beamonesque made a cracking debut in a strong Maiden Plate at Scottsville in August, won by Sovereign State, who is smart, has won another two races and is unbeaten in three starts. There were other nice horses around them like Star Performer and King Of The Gauls. Beamonesque has had a break since, but he should be competitive from a good draw. He is a horse we think has ability.”

Race 3: Red Hot Rose is scratched.

Race 6, 1600m: “A Pinnacle Stakes prep for three good horses. Safe Passage has had a bit of a rest and after last season’s Durban campaign will need the run, we hope to see him come through it well. The same goes for East Coast, laid off since may. They’re being prepared with the Summer Cup in mind. Union Square is the fittest of the three. He’s had two fair prep runs after being gelded, has a handy weight and should be competitive here. There are a few other decent horses in the race, most are prepping which makes it an interesting contest.”

Race 7, 1200m: “We have Black Silver in this race, coming off a wind operation and a rest. She hasn’t been showing much at home, she’ll need it and will come on with the run.”

Race 8, 1500m: “Littlemaryshunshine has been rested since April. She’s a nice filly and she enjoys this track, but we expect her to need this run and come on for fitness.

Race 9, 1450m: “Sharapova is consistent, never out of the frame in eight starts and is well worthy of a second career win. She could be in the right race here, she remains in good form and will give a good account of herself. Nyali Beach hasn’t been on the racetrack since last December, she should need this run to bring her along.”

Form pointers for Durbanville, Saturday:
Race 3, 1400m: Candice Bass-Robinson speaks in high regard of Fire Away colt Foudre, who looks to have only Get Impressed to beat. The swinger looks an even-money shoe-in.

Race 6, 1600m: The impressive way in which Green With Envy handled a step up from Maiden to a Class C Handicap last time, gives him the look of classic horse. He is undoubtedly a Guineas hopeful this year and should be even better over a mile. An exciting prospect who should confirm the promise from his first two runs.

Race 7, 1250m: Two-time course and distance winner Beerenberg has his wide draw to overcome and may well do so with Richard Fourie up, but it might be wise to include in-form Justin Snaith’s Steinbeck, who ran surprisingly well over this distance last time out and warrants respect from a better draw.

Race 8, 1250m: Winter Cloud’s fitness after a rest is the key to this race in which there are a few tough rivals. Overall, her top-level form and second to Mrs Geriatrix looks to be outstanding and a winning comeback is likely.
