Following Mamelodi Sundowns' defeat to TS Galaxy this week, Orlando Pirates moved one step closer to claiming the Betway Premiership title as they prepare to take on Durban City at home on Saturday.
With Sundowns suffering an unfortunate 3-2 loss against Galaxy on Tuesday night, Pirates currently sit three points behind the leaders in second-position with two games left to play.
As it stands, Pirates accumulated 65 points from 28 games, along with a superior +44 goal difference. While the Soweto giants claimed three wins and two draws in their last five matches, a win against Durban City coupled with avoiding a big defeat in their final game against Orbit College, will see the Buccaneers bag their first league title since the 2011/12 season.
Pirates could thus end Sundowns hopes of winning their ninth-consecutive league championship.
Durban City on the other hand are vying for a place in the top eight, sitting in seventh position with 38 points following 28 matches.
However, the KwaZulu-Natal side recorded three draws in a row in the league, along with back-to-back defeats against Golden Arrows and Magesi in their last five.
With Pirates in line to win the Betway Premiership crown, Abdeslam Ouaddou expressed that he never gave up on the prospect of pipping Sundowns.
“A lot of people were already saying we had lost the title,” the Bucs coach said.
“I knew that as long as we were still mathematically in it, we had to continue playing.
“I tried to explain that to the people.”
