As serious contenders for the 2025/26 Betway Premiership trophy, log leaders Orlando Pirates will prepare to take on Marumo Gallants this weekend as they hope to extend their lead over reigning league champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Buccaneers currently find themselves at the summit of the log on 35 points after 15 matches played, three points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns who are in second.
Pirates initially had two games in hand over Sundowns as of 27 January but managed to topple the Brazilians with back-to-back wins over Magesi and AmaZulu respectively. Overall, the Soweto giants recorded four wins and one draw in their last five matches.
Gallants on the other hand are in 13th position, with 15 points to their name after 17 games played. The Bloemfontein side are on a run of three consecutive losses, namely to TS Galaxy, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu respectively.
Their slump in form also includes two draws in their last five Betway Premiership ties and are just one point away from the relegation zone.

Reflecting on the 25/26 title race, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou believes that having three teams gun for the trophy is an exciting prospect for fans amid Sundowns’ dominant reign during the last eight seasons.
“It brings value to South African football [having three teams fighting for the league at this point of the season],” Ouaddou said.
“You cannot have a team dominating for decades, winning the league with 20 points. It is not entertaining.
“You even lose interest in football. So, I think it’s good that now we have maybe three teams fighting for the title.”
