After putting Mali to the sword in the last group stage fixture, reigning Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions South Africa will prepare to do battle against Senegal in the quarter-finals of the showpiece on Saturday.

Banyana Banyana were head and shoulders above their competitors in Group C and rounded off their final group stage assignment with a 4-0 win against Mali at the Honneur Stadium on Monday night.

While Banyana made light work of Mali, head coach Desiree Ellis believes that no easy game at the current WAFCON showpiece.

“We have a couple of days to have a good look at them [Senegal], but they’ve shown in a very difficult group that they can fight it out with the best and we have to be at our absolute best to get a result because again it’s not going to be easy,” Ellis said.

“I don’t think any game has been easy at this WAFCON, it shows that teams on the continent are improving – every FIFA International window there are countries playing.”

While South Africa claimed maximum points last time out, Senegal suffered a 1-0 defeat against host nation Morocco in their final Group A game last Saturday.

Nevertheless, Senegal made it through to the knockout rounds as one of the two best third-placed teams in the group phase.

Reflecting on their qualification, Senegal head coach Mame Moussa Cisse is of the thought that their group ‘deserves its place’ for the quality of football that they played.

"We did the work, and that's what matters. This round is over, even if it was very difficult,” Cisse said.
“Sporting justice has finally triumphed. This group deserves its place given the work accomplished, the efforts made, and the quality of our matches.

“Even though we lost against the two big teams in this group, we did what was necessary from the first match, which put us in a safe place afterward."
